Mercedes-AMG's performance division is preparing for a major transformation. AMG is set to introduce a new electric sedan, following in the footsteps of the AMG CLS 63 and the AMG GT 4-door coupe. The unnamed sedan will be unveiled as AMG's first fully electric vehicle (EV) in June.

Ahead of the official unveiling, a teaser campaign has already begun, capturing the attention of global automotive enthusiasts. First previewed in 2022 with the Vision AMG concept, the model offers a rakish, modern design that stands out from the V-8-powered sedans.

Four-door practicality, sporty design

The vehicle features a sloping roofline reminiscent of the Porsche Taycan and features a practical four-door body style. Official images of the hidden prototype show off a long hood, a wide rear, and a low stance. While it's unclear whether this will be a liftback model or a change to the traditional sedan style, the vehicle is based on a new electric platform called AMG.EA. The platform aims to make electric cars more exciting and could also be the basis for an SUV version.

Powerful performance, YASA motors

At the heart of this sedan are YASA's axial-flux motors, each capable of producing 480 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. With one motor mounted on each axle, an all-wheel-drive system could be possible that delivers 1,000 hp and over 1,000 lb-ft of torque. This would enable the vehicle to compete directly with the likes of the Porsche Taycan Turbo and Audi RS E-Tron GT. But since AMG's One-Eleven supercar concept used a dual-motor RWD setup, the sedan's drivetrain could be more versatile.

Weight and Aerodynamics: A Balance

Weight is a challenge for electric vehicles, especially since the plug-in hybrid V8 version of the current AMG GT 4-door coupe weighs 5,269 pounds. However, the new EV sedan is likely to offer improved range through a more aerodynamic design. While the SUV version will be heavier than the sedan, the sedan's slippery body design will be ideal for long journeys. AMG's engineers are trying to strike a balance between weight and performance.

The Soul of AMG in the Electric Age

The arrival of this electric sedan raises questions about the future of AMG. Can electric drivetrains replace the sound and feel of traditional V-8 engines? While instant torque and rapid acceleration are exciting, the integrity of the driving experience needs to be maintained.

The mixed reactions to the latest C63's electrified four-cylinder engine have raised concerns that the complete removal of the ICE (internal combustion engine) could hurt AMG's soul. However, the success of this EV could provide Mercedes with the funding it needs to keep the V-8 in the future.
