The Volkswagen Golf R is the epitome of transforming an ordinary family car into an extraordinary performance machine. Since the R32 in 2003, this model has carved out a niche for itself in the automotive world. However, while the Golf R has taken a slight detour in the Mk8 version, the new Mk8.5 model seeks to revive this legacy, offering more power and improved dynamics.
Historical background and challenges
Volkswagen's diesel emissions scandal plunged the company into a financial crisis, which led to cost-cutting measures. As a result, the Mk7 Golf lost its edge to the Mk8, falling short of enthusiasts' expectations. However, with the arrival of the Mk8.5, quality complaints from previous models were addressed. The Golf R also received a strong performance boost, which once again puts this vehicle in the spotlight.

Class-leading power
The 2026 Golf R produces 328 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque from its 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. That beats the likes of the Honda Civic Type R and Toyota GR Corolla to become the most powerful hot hatch available in America today. Only the Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 and Audi RS 3 top it, but the Golf R leads the pack at its price point.
Driving Experience
The Golf R’s power is evident on the road. It’s fast in a straight line, but it really shines around corners and obstacles. On the winding roads of West Virginia, this car handles speed with ease. But when it comes to feeling the speed, the speedometer often shows numbers that are higher than the driver expects, which is something to be aware of.
Transmission change
Unfortunately, the Golf R no longer offers a manual transmission. With the manual's popularity waning in the global market, VW has switched to a seven-speed dual-clutch DSG. However, this automatic transmission performs well. The DSG is smooth in city driving and precise in spirited driving, effectively masking turbo lag.

Euro Style Package
The optional Euro Style Package adds to the Golf R's appeal. This package, which includes an Akrapovic titanium exhaust, sunroof removal, and manual cloth seats, shaves 80 pounds off the car's weight. At $3,795, the deeper growl of the Akrapovic exhaust and improved driving experience make this package worth it, although a noticeable resonance is noticeable at 1,800 rpm.
Mechanical excellence
The Mk8.5 Golf R retains the same all-wheel drive system and rear differential as the Mk8, which distributes torque precisely to all four wheels. At the Jefferson Circuit in Summit Point, this system provides more flexibility in cornering. VW's Dynamic Chassis Control, in "Special" mode, offers settings optimized for the harsh conditions of the Nurburgring, ensuring excellent performance on both the road and the track.

Price and competition
At $48,325, the Golf R offers great performance at an affordable price, but it is still priced higher than the GTI. The GTI offers a similar driving experience at a lower price, but the Golf R's all-wheel drive and power set it apart. Meanwhile, the Audi S3, at a higher price, offers an improved interior and similar performance, but the Golf R's discreet appeal maintains its unique position.
