Mazda closed its first electric car Mazda MX-30 in Europe. This news is important for American people who are interested in the global market of electric vehicles. The Mazda MX-30 was launched in 2020 and was known for its special design and environment-friendly features. But its low range and some shortcomings did not give it success in Europe. Mazda has now removed this model from Europe's markets. However, its range-extinction version in which the rotary engine charges the battery is currently available.
The biggest drawback of Mazda MX-30 was its 124 mile range, actually less than 100 miles. This range was much less than today's electric vehicles where models like Tesla Model 3 and Byd give more than 300 miles. Also, MX-30 coach doors and tight rear cabin also disappointed customers. In Europe, where the demand for zero-furust vehicles is increasing rapidly, this car did not meet expectations. After selling only 1322 units in the UK in 2024, Mazda decided to shut down.
This step of Mazda can be understood due to the strict Zev rules of Europe. By 2025, manufacturers in the European Union will have to do 28% zero-furnace vehicles of their sales. After the MX-30 failure, Mazda is now focusing on its next electric car Mazda 6e which will come to Europe in 2026 by the end of UK and 2025. This new model is known as EZ-6 in China and will have 68.8 kwh and 80 kwh battery options that will give a WLTP range of 300 to 343 miles.
This change in Mazda's strategy also matters to American customers as it shows the company's global electric vehicle plans. MX-30 had already been withdrawn from the US market and now it also came to an end in Europe. Mazda says that it will create a special electric vehicle platform by 2027, after which the EVS will start a big launch from 2028. Till then the company is focusing on hybrid and range-extremity techniques such as EZ-60 SUVs that will come as CX-6E in Europe. This model is the size of Tesla Model Y and will have modern design and smart driving technology.

The increasing influence of Chinese manufacturers like Byd in Europe is a challenge for Mazda. In April 2025, byd beaten Tesla in Europe and sold 7231 electric vehicles while Tesla was sold. This competition is putting pressure on traditional manufacturers such as Mazda who are not strong in the EV market. Mazda's partnership with Changan Mazda with EZ-6 and EZ-60 is an attempt to meet this deficiency.
The closure of Mazda MX-30 in Europe is a major change in Mazda's electric vehicle strategy. This reports for American customers that the market of electric vehicles is changing rapidly and factors such as range design and price play a big role in customers' choice. Mazda's new cars such as Mazda 6E and CX-6 hope that the company will bring better EVs in future. Till then American buyers have to consider Mazda's hybrid models or EVs of other brands.
