Slate Electric Truck: The Dream of an Affordable EV

1. Why the Slate is Worth Noting

Are you looking for an affordable, no-frills electric vehicle (EV) in your garage? If so, the Slate Electric Truck is likely to catch your eye. It’s the perfect second car—simple and practical. While there are customization options like a small five-seater SUV, this truck’s small size does limit its range and capability somewhat. For example, it’s hard to fit more than five people in it, due to its shorter wheelbase than a BMW 3 Series. Unless they come up with something creative like a front bench seat, that is.

2. Think Big: The Magic of a Long Wheelbase

Now, what happens if you make the Slate a little bigger? With a long wheelbase and two extra doors, this vehicle can be transformed into many things—a crew cab pickup, a sedan, or even a wagon! A long wagon model, with two or three doors, could be a hit with families or those who love adventure. A design like this would be more practical, and would appeal to a lot of people. Who doesn’t want more space and versatility?

3. Wagon Dream: A New Look

I dreamed of a wagon version—the Slate’s wheelbase is extended by eight inches, the body lowered by three inches, and it gives it a classic wagon look. It still maintains the ground clearance of an SUV, but is sleeker and more aerodynamic. If you could add three rows of seats or a larger trunk, this vehicle would be a real game-changer. It would be great for road trips or kids’ soccer games, while still maintaining its rugged, exterior look.

4. Tech Potential: More Power, More Options

We’re not sure if the Slate’s platform can handle a larger body, but I believe they’ve prepared a flexible design for a variety of options in the future. Right now, the Slate only has a rear motor, but there’s room to add another motor to the front axle. That means all-wheel drive (AWD) could be a reality! AWD will increase off-road capability and appeal to more people—especially in areas with rain or snow.

5. Range and Power: Bigger Battery, Bigger Dreams

Another big advantage of the long wheelbase? A bigger battery. The current 84.3 kWh battery provides about 240 miles of range—not bad, but a little short for long trips. A lower, more aerodynamic body design will reduce air resistance and increase range. Combined with a larger battery and a wagon with three rows of seats, the Slate will be ahead of the competition. Who doesn’t love the worry of having to worry about charging for a road trip?

6. Road to Market: Big Plans, Big Challenges

A larger Slate truck or wagon might be a bit more expensive, but my guess is that it could be priced under $35,000. That’s still a great deal! But production won’t start until late 2026, so we’ll have to wait and see how the market plays out. A starting price of $20,000 is a big goal, but Slate has a solid plan. They aim to build 150,000 vehicles per year at a renovated factory in Indiana. A four-door model? That would make this project even more exciting!
