BMW recently revealed that it is considering an all-wheel-drive version, i.e. M2 xDrive, for its M2 car. BMW M's head of development Dirk Häcker told BMWBlog that there is a possibility of bringing such a model, but a final decision has not yet been made.
This news is exciting for car lovers, as the M2 is so far known for rear-wheel-drive. Adding an all-wheel-drive system can transform the car's power and driving experience. The move could appeal to BMW's customers who want better grip and stability, especially in bad weather.
The current model of the M2 is famous for its excellent driving and strength. Last year, BMW updated the M2's engine, bringing its power to 473 horsepower. But with a manual gearbox, this power is limited.
With the all-wheel-drive system, BMW can probably increase this strength further, as the xDrive technology can handle more power. This change could make the M2 more attractive, but some fans are concerned that it could diminish the car's pure driving experience.
This idea is also important, because the design of the M2 resembles the M4, which has a slightly shorter wheelbase. Some people on X wrote that bringing the M2 xDrive could reduce the importance of the M4 xDrive.
Still, it's a chance for BMW to further diversify its M series. The all-wheel-drive system may appeal to drivers who drive on icy or wet roads. But the question remains whether BMW will be able to retain its traditional identity with this change.

Dirk Häcker indicated that the company is seriously considering it, but it will take more time. This move could put BMW ahead of the competition, especially against brands like Audi and Mercedes.
Finally, the idea of the M2 xDrive has become a topic of discussion among BMW fans. Some consider this a positive change, which will make the car more versatile. On the other hand, some older fans want to keep the rear-wheel-drive feature.
